Bcl-2 and the regulation of programmed cell death
نویسنده
چکیده
T HE terms programmed cell death (PCD) 1 and apoptosis are often used interchangeably to describe a mechanism of cellular demise that is believed to play an important role in a wide variety of physiological situations, and that when dysregulated can contribute to the pathogenesis of many diseases ranging from cancer to AIDS. Recently, the bcl-2 gene has emerged as a critical regulator of PCD in a variety of physiological and pathological contexts.

Impact of Duration and Severity of Persistent Pain on Programmed Cell Death
Programmed cell death is a highly regulated form of cell death, mostly distinguished by the activation of a family of cystein-aspartate proteases (caspases) that cleave various proteins resulting in morphological and biochemical changes characteristic of this form of cell death. Several recent studies have addressed the role of programmed cell death in inflammatory and chronic pain states. Casp...

متن کاملbcl-x, a bcl-2-related gene that functions as a dominant regulator of apoptotic cell death.
We report the isolation of bcl-x, a bcl-2-related gene that can function as a bcl-2-independent regulator of programmed cell death (apoptosis). Alternative splicing results in two distinct bcl-x mRNAs. The protein product of the larger mRNA, bcl-xL, is similar in size and predicted structure to Bcl-2. When stably transfected into an IL-3-dependent cell line, bcl-xL inhibits cell death upon grow...
متن کاملIncreases in Bcl-2 and cleavage of caspase-1 and caspase-3 in human brain after head injury.
The bcl-2 and caspase families are important regulators of programmed cell death in experimental models of ischemic, excitotoxic, and traumatic brain injury. The Bcl-2 family members Bcl-2 and Bcl-xL suppress programmed cell death, whereas Bax promotes programmed cell death. Activated caspase-1 (interleukin-1beta converting enzyme) and caspase-3 (Yama/Apopain/Cpp32) cleave proteins that are imp...
